Poker Aggressive Or Passive
This exercise teaches the student to be more aggressive, as they no longer have the passive option of calling. They can still check, fold, bet or raise. They just can’t call.
- The Loose Aggressive/Passive You should already be familiar with the classic tight-aggressive and loose-aggressive definitions, which we detailed in our beginner lesson about poker playing styles. But the loose aggressive/passive type of player is a rare breed. They will raise a lot of hands pre-flop, but will often give up on the flop or turn.
- Poker Personality – Passive vs. While loose and tight behavior profiles what hand range a player may be willing to move forward with, passivity and aggression define how a player bets when dealt a hand within their approved range. Passive Poker Player: This player is not going to bet more than he has to. Check, limp and call are.
1. You either have the best hand at showdown or,
2. You make the other player(s) fold and take down the pot.
There´s just no way around it. If you want to make money in poker you will need to figure out a way how to master those two variables. Now, let´s dive and breakdown each…
First, in order to win money by having the best hand at showdown you need to either be the luckiest poker player in the world or, have access to the poker site backend servers and manipulate the cards so you always get the best hand. Does this sound doable? Obviously Not! So, let´s dive into the second point which was making the other player(s) at the table fold their hand.
This sounds a lot more practical and realistic than having access to the poker site´s servers and manipulate the shuffling and the dealing of the cards to actually have the best hand everytime. This is something we actually have control over.
BUT…How do we achieve this? BY PLAYING AGGRESSIVELY!
This is the main reason why on any poker results graph you will see three (3) lines. A green one that references your net results at the tables. A blue one that displays our winnings at showdown and, one the most popular and famous lines of all, THE RED LINE that displays our non-showdown winnings.
If you really want to improve your game and I strongly advise you to focus on how to improve your red line. If you do a little research on the internet on ways to improve it you will see most of the recommendations you read are going to be focusing on that red line.
Stuff like stealing the blinds, play more hands in position, semi bluff raise turn, thin value betting, double barreling, triple barrel bluffing, bluff raise river, etc., are common advises you will often see when you check for ways to improve your read line and they all have to do with aggression.
There are four basic types of poker players. If you play against live players, whether in a land-based casino or online, you will encounter each of these types of players. You are also basically one of these types.
If you wish to advance as a poker player you must become thoroughly familiar with the types of players you play against. You must also become more aware of your own tendencies. The better players you encounter will be reading you from the get-go so you should develop the skills to read them as well.
The characteristics of the different types of players show up in their betting style, their general behavior, and their bluffing tendencies. Very few players can fully alter their personalities when they sit down at the poker table. The players who win most often are the ones who learn to project an image of themselves that they want you to believe.
The higher you go in your poker playing the more sophisticated are your opponents. Knowing these poker player types is absolutely necessary for success at any level but especially so at higher levels of poker competition.
